Chirikof Island is located in the Kodiak Archipelago in the Gulf of Alaska approximately 130 km southwest of Kodiak Island and 405 km by air south of Anchorage.
Chirikof Island is covered with grasses and sedges lying west of the western tree line in Alaska. The island is shaped rather like a swim fin, heel to the north, toes to the south. It is surrounded by treacherous reefs and unpredictable seas.
